Tuesday, September 24: Review a book, place, or product.
A week ago today I went to my first Book Club meeting. It is my first ever book club. I feel like a real live adult.
I love reading. And since Avery was born, I have only had time to read a half of a book. Saaaaaad. Book Club gives me an excuse to demand time for reading.
There were 5 of us able to gather to review our first selection. Which was The Secret History by Donna Tartt.
Most of us had mixed feelings about the book. Such as, why don’t I like any of these characters? If I can’t relate to any of these people in any way, how do I enjoy the book? Where was the suspense? Build up to the big event? Why do I have to use the dictionary so much to understand this? Why does it have 4 stars on Amazon?
So, I didn’t like the book much. It was too long and most of the first half was very boring to me. Plus I can’t really get into a book unless I like or can relate to a character. There was nobody in this book that applied to. But it did make for some really great discussion. We didn’t even use a reader guide and had plenty to talk about/try to figure out. It was a really fun first Book Club meeting.
I get to host/choose the book for next month. My selection is Let’s Pretend this Never Happened by Jenny Lawson. A.K.A. My blogging Idol. Read along if you’d like, then check back next month to see what I thought of it.
Do you have a book club? Any books you think would make for a good discussion?
